Pizza and Bread Oven Workshop: 29 May – 07 June 2022

In this permaskills Pizza and Bread Oven Workshop, we are building a pizza and bread oven for Manon, Rich, and their kids near Avô in Central Portugal. There are no skill requirements. You will learn everything you need to build a complete pizza and bread oven with stone, clay, sand, and straw.

From May 29th to June 7th 2022, we will start another permaskills Pizza and Bread Oven Workshop near Avô in Coimbra district, Central Portugal. This workshop will provide you with plenty of opportunities to get hands-on experience in Natural Building, all the skills and especially the confidence you need to build a pizza and bread oven for yourself. The highlights of this workshop are the layers we are building, to achieve a good level of insulation as well as the insulated thermal mass on the inside, which will keep the oven hot for longer after firing stops. We will include some creative Cob sculpting on the outer layers and finish everything with a layer of plaster to make everything look smooth.

Project: Pizza and Bread Oven

In this year’s permaskills Pizza and Bread Oven Workshop, we will add a Pizza and Bread Oven made out of Cob, which is made of clay, sand and straw, to Manon and Rich’s outdoor kitchen. They would love to host pizza parties for families and friends and bake bread the traditional way.

Workshop: Natural Building Introduction

This permaskills Pizza and Bread Oven Workshop is a Natural Building Beginner Certificate course, as it consists of theoretical instruction (in English or English & German) with lectures & graphics as well as hands-on construction for 7 – 8 hours a day. The successful completion of this Workshop gives you a Natural Building Certificate. It includes the basics of building a shallow foundation, a stemwall and the making of and building with cob.

Extras

Insulation – For this workshop Ruin – we will add a layer of insulation that is completely wrapping the inner thermal mass core. This ensures longer heat retention and therefore higher efficiency.

Natural Builder Certification

You will receive a permaskills Natural Builder Certificate, all the teaching materials by email and the permaskills – Natural Builder’s Handbook, which is a summary of the workshop building steps, upon graduation.

Workshop Requirements

There are no skill requirements for these permaskills Natural Building Workshops! That said, it certainly won’t hurt if you know some things and put them to good use or share them with others. Nobody is perfect and we are always curious to learn other ways of doing things.

  • Arrival Sunday, 4 pm: Opening Circle / Welcome Dinner / Introduction
  • 2 days: Foundation / Rock part of Base
  • 1 day: Cob part of Base
  • 1 day: dry time, lecture and opportunity for a creative break
  • 1 day: first layer
  • 1 day: dry time, lecture and opportunity for a creative break
  • 1 day: second and third layer
  • 1 day: dry time, lecture and opportunity for a creative break
  • 1 day: sculpting, plastering and Closing Circle

There is often someone who leads yoga or some other movement practice in the morning and/or the afternoon. We like to have one evening a week to show slides, videos or have workshop related debates. The rest of the time you can spend on your own, join a jam session or contribute something to share with the group.

Manon, Rich, and their kids

Manon, Rich and their kids are a Dutch- English Family of 5, living their dream on an off-grid small farm in Central Portugal.

It’s their passion to live in harmony with nature and share their knowledge about permaculture, natural building & farm life in general.

Their farm is located in a beautiful place, in nature with stunning sunsets. Right on it’s doorstep you will find swimming, beautiful walks as well as the local villages within walking distance. It’s a beautiful place to dive into Portuguese life.

Manon and Rich love community and learning from others, as well as sharing their permaculture, gardening, natural building and general knowledge of living in harmony with nature. They are also an unschooling family and very open to share any insights on that.

The two small villages within walking distance have cafe’s and a beautiful swimming spot. Amazing trails are passing by the farm, and if you have transport there are so many great activities you can do. Especially if you love nature. You are welcome to join their Yoga, Running or Walking activities.

Robert ‘Cob-Rob’ Brendler

Robert ‘Cob-Rob’ Brendler has been doing construction work since the age of 12 when he accompanied his grandpa on construction sites during his summer vacation. He’s a Jack of all trades, experienced in Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical Wiring, Home Automation, Cob Building & Sculpting, Green-Roofs, Non Violent Communication, Teaching and Team-Building and is bringing it all together to give you a complete experience from foundation to roof. Robert loves the Natural Building Community and bringing together the kind of people that are interested in it. He loves teaching and the look on faces when people succeed in doing things they never imagined they could do.

We offer 2 work trade discounts, one in the kitchen making breakfast in the morning and one onsite in the morning before breakfast or in the afternoon between class and dinner. An ideal learning opportunity to get a glimpse on every detail of the build. Each work trade is 50€ off the tuition fees per week for one hour of help a day.
